Workpackages

The SOCRATES project consists of 7 work packages. Coordinator of the project is VTT, Finland.

WP1 is containing all coordination tasks.  WP2 provides a state-of-the-art work. The next three work packages from WP3 to WP5 focus on experimental research. WP6 contains model development work. WP7 aims to high level training & mobility, communication and dissemination aspects.

WP1 – Project Management (lead VTT)

WP1 is containing all coordination tasks. It enclosures management of consortium operations, financial and administrative management, and data management (including also ethics management and responsible research and innovation
(RRI) framework).

WP2 – State-of-the-art on liquid source
term (lead CIEMAT)

WP2 is dedicated on reviewing the current knowledge on the liquid source term phenomena in severe NPP accident context. It will cover past accidents, code capabilities to simulate liquid source term phenomena, knowledge from other simulation tools (like geochemical tools) and databases, and summarizing work on critical analysis of experimental and simulation results. The current possible measures and severe accident management actions to manage liquid source term will be reviewed.

WP3 – Boundary evolution conditions in
the bulk liquid phase (lead ARSN)

WP3 focuses on studying the evolution of liquid phase chemistry and properties under various conditions. It will be extended to cover also interaction of fission
products (e.g. Cs, Sr).

WP4 – Source of liquid phase contamination (lead PSI)

WP4 focuses on leaching of ceramic material models, nuclear fuel pellet, prototypic metallic corium and real corium. The input on experimental conditions coming also from WP3 will be utilized.

WP5 – Innovative clean-up technologies
and analysis of radionuclides (lead CHALMERS)

WP5 develops innovative sorbent materials for radionuclides from design to synthesis, characterization and testing. NURES will be used as a reference material to compare the sorbent performance with. Development of a miniature size radiochemical laboratory will be performed by testing radionuclide detection from liquid and sorbent samples.

WP6 – Enhancement of SA tools and
Recommendations (lead ARSN)

WP6 focuses on defining the key chemical processes for Cs, Sr and U in sump. The models developed with the experimental data from WP3 and WP4 will be implemented in SA codes (e.g. AC2, ASTEC). Selected SA scenarios will be calculated. The project outcomes will be summarized in recommendations to regulators and nuclear community.

WP7 – Dissemination of knowledge,
synthesis and training (lead KTH)

WP7 focuses on communication, dissemination and exploitation of the SOCRATES results. It includes for example preparation of scientific publications, researcher mobilities and preparation of educational materials based on SOCRATES results.
